How do I stop my dog from digging?

First we need to find out why your dog is digging.  They could lack certain minerals in their diet, and dig holes in hopes of finding them in the soil in your yard.  Terrier breeds are natural hunting dogs, and will instinctively dig in the ground for prey or food.  Your dog may be digging a hole to stash away their favorite chew or toy to save for later, or search for items that they have hidden in the past. In the Summer, dogs dig holes to find a cooler spot to escape the Summer heat.  In colder, rainier weather, they may be trying to find protection from the elements.  Dogs can also dig to try and find water. They also may dig for entertainment when they learn that roots and soil “play back”.  Unfortunately, dogs also may try to escape to get something, to get somewhere or to get away from something and typically dig along or under fences.

We can give you management tools and behavior modification strategies to solve your dog’s digging problems.
